The Altered Stones, 2

Fairy tales are simply tales, told and re-told, but changed over time.

It has been four months since Maggie learned the dark truth behind the tale of the Princess and the Pea and freed Princess Lindy from the cursed Emerald. Lindy is now back in the past where she belongs, queen of her tiny Scandinavian country, and Maggie is a fully reformed ex-stalker.

Except … she can’t stop doing internet searches on Lindy and her country.

One morning, Maggie wakes to find history turned on its head. Apparently, you can’t destroy a centuries-old curse without consequence. In order to prevent the changes in history from wiping out the present, Maggie resurrects her stalking gene and learns that fairy tales don’t stay dead for long. Or at all.

Back in 1623, Lindy is juggling a threat to her family, a handsome new guard she’s not supposed to have feelings for, and a cursed Topaz with ties to the tale of Thumbelina. When past and present collide, Lindy and Maggie are brought together again, and another of Andersen’s tales turns from twisted fiction to chilling fact.

Excerpt:

Maggie

 Present Day—Virginia

Internet stalking took on a whole new meaning the summer after The Emerald Incident. You were supposed to stalk hot guys. Frenemies. Maybe the occasional college recruiter.

Not dead princesses.

But I couldn’t help stalking Lindy, even though she’d technically been dead over four hundred years. To me she’d only been gone a few months. She’d saved my family and become my friend, and I would never get to say thank you, or goodbye.

I stalked when I should have been studying. I stalked right before bed. I stalked first thing in the morning. I often didn’t realize what I was doing until my computer was already queued up to the history of a little-known country called Valstenia.

But history didn’t change. Lindy had lived a good life, and now she was gone. The end.

On a scale of one to crazy, I wasn’t sure just how high ‘stalking dead princesses’ ranked. It was probably certifiable. I was probably certifiable.

Oh well.

“Maggie, you’re going to be late for work!” my dad yelled.

My hand hovered over the computer mouse. “Just a sec!”

I also had Lindy to thank for the fact that my dad no longer lived in a grief-induced stupor. Shortly after The Incident, my boyfriend Garon had called, pretending to be the lawyer for a recently deceased—fictional—great aunt, with a handsome inheritance for me and my brother—money we’d actually gotten from selling the emerald Lindy had given me. My dad had been hyper-attentive ever since.

Even though I couldn’t get away with much anymore, I wouldn’t trade him for the ghost he used to be.

Unfortunately, he’d refused to use any of the money to update my bedroom, or buy me new clothes. He only caught up on the mortgage payments, then put the rest into the bank, insisting it was for us, not him.

As in, it was for college, not for fun. Ugh.

My fingers flew across the keyboard without my permission. I clicked on the link that was my new best friend and went to find my shoes while my computer thought about obeying me. My dad also refused to buy me a laptop. “Waiting teaches character,” he said whenever I complained about how slow my old desktop was.

I found my shoes underneath a pile of clean clothes that hadn’t quite made it into my drawers yet. The shoes were tan suede ankle boots—with three inch heels—and I hated them. But they went much better than my sneakers with the khaki mini-skirt and starched white shirt I had to wear to my summer job at the Gap. I scowled at the shoes as I worked them on.

When my feet were properly confined, I sat up and glanced at my screen. “Stupid, slow computer! Oh, wait…”

I peered closer.

“Page not found? Really?”

Piper said I should stop talking to my computer, but I kinda liked having someone—okay, something—to yell at whenever I wanted to. It helped me avoid thinking about the fact that Garon had given up his whole life—his destiny, even—to be with me.

I was glad, of course.

Well, at least, the selfish part of me was. But another part of me wondered what I was keeping him from.

“Why couldn’t you find the page?” I yelled at my computer. “I’ve only been on it like a thousand times a day for the past three months!”

I hit refresh.

Page not found.

“Ugh!” I clicked the search box and typed, Queen Shalyndria Valstenia. I slid a clip into my hair to pull it away from my face. My bob was too short for the mandated ponytail, but my boss insisted I make some sort of effort to put it back each day. I glossed my lips and did my mascara.

It was really time for a new computer.

“Maggie, I’m leaving now!”

“I’m coming, I promise!” My car had refused to start yesterday and was now sitting in the repair shop awaiting a prognosis. So today, I was at the mercy of my dad for a ride to work.

Finally, the page appeared. But the link I’d clicked on months ago was no longer there. The top result used to be a Wiki page listing the details of Valstenia’s final years, and the benevolent Queen Shalyndria who had peacefully led her country until it became part of Sweden in the late 1600s. That was the page I’d memorized word for word in the time since I’d last seen Lindy.

But now the top result was a page on Valstenia itself. Holding my breath, I clicked on it and scanned the text. There was no mention of Lindy—er, Queen Shalyndria—anywhere. My pulse quickened as I re-read the passage. Garon and Lindy’s father, King Edvin, was mentioned only briefly. After his death, several names were listed as rulers, but none that I recognized. I kept reading:

“In the late 1600s, Valstenia became part of Denmark…”

Wait, what? Valstenia had become a part of Sweden, not Denmark. A chill slipped down my spine. What was going on?

Long and Short LASR
Written by orchid on 15th Dec 2017

Welcome to Valestenia, a 17th century country on the tip of modern-day Sweden. Queen Shalyndria has been kept in slavery for four hundred years, but now she has returned to her own time and finds herself thrust onto the throne. Maggie is a present day teenager who had a hand in releasing the Queen from slavery. Shalyndria’s brother, Garon, has come forward in time as he and Maggie have fallen in love. When Maggie’s computer shows an ever changing history to what she knows to be true, Garon returns to the 17th century to put things right. When he doesn’t return Maggie and her brother Tanner search for Garon and find a way to travel to the past to help. This book is full of present day travels, historical problems needing to be put right, and the best thing of all – Magic! The characters could be the kids next door, while the new Queen shows the uncertainty of one thrust into the limelight of ruling a country. Even the fantasy characters had me looking over my shoulder to make sure they weren’t real and creeping up on me. This book is a true fantasy novel. No goblins and elves, or dragons and fairies, this is magic as used by real people (well real in the book) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Brilliant book. Exceptionally good story. A must read.

Strap in for another round of adventure!
Written by Aud14 on 8th Oct 2017

An exciting tale of sword fighting, spells, and spy-by's! This is the sequel to the author's EMERALD BOUND novel, and picks up shortly after EB ends. It follows dual main characters Lindy and Maggie and their efforts to keep Lindy (now Queen Shalyndria) in power when an insidious magical force threatens her kingdom (um... 400 years in the past). The author juggles the two different timeframes and time travel deftly again, making for a fun romp through time and place! I especially loved how Maggie's brother was given a bigger role in this book, and the sibling banter between Maggie and her brother felt spot on. I really liked his character as it became more developed. There are some *awesome* surprises revealed later in the book, btw. (But I won't spoil them!) DO read EMERALD BOUND first, as TR is a sequel, and relies on some prerequisite knowledge to fully enjoy it. All in all, an engaging read with plenty of adventure!

Unique and Fun, with a twist
Written by teenreader on 8th Oct 2017

I love fairy tales but I'm always on the search for something slightly different. If a book can pull me in like a classic fairy tale and yet still leave me guessing, then I love it even more. Topaz Reign in one of those books. When I found out it takes the classic story of Thumbelina, but gives it a twist, I knew it was going to be something unique and fun. Before you jump in to Topaz Reign, you should probably read Emerald Bound first (check out my review here). Both books are in the Altered Stones series by Teresa Richards. Emerald Bound follows the story of The Princess and the Pea. Topaz Reign continues the story of Maggie and Lindy, but with new problems, more romance, and a bit of time travel. I was sad at the end of Emerald Bound when present-day Maggie stays in our world and Lindy returns to her tiny Scandinavian country over 400 years before because I wanted them to stay friends! But, in Topaz Reign, they meet up again because during some of Maggie's research on Lindy's country, she discovers that history is changing. That leads her to realize that the curse she broke of the Emerald Necklace had consequences. Now she must find a way to get things back to where they are supposed to be, all while Lindy has to deal with her country being overtaken by an imposter. My favorite part about these books is how they take Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales and turn them into something a little darker (like all the original Grimm stories), but then they still give you that happily-ever-after feeling too. I think the combination of our contemporary world and the historical fantasy part put together give these novels a uniqueness I haven't seen in any young adult books. They are definitely worth the read for teens and adults who love to keep their youth alive.

Action-packed adventure that I couldn't read fast enough!
Written by lilacqueen75 on 8th Oct 2017

I fell deep, head-over-heels in love with Book 1 and was so excited to continue on right where that one left off. Be sure to read this series in order to get the full effect. Maggie and her brother, Tanner, are very likable and adventurous characters. Although teenagers, they do care for one another and I love how they really have each other's backs throughout this book. This story goes back and forth between modern times and the past, just as the other one did, and I love that process because I felt that I really got the full story, even though history keeps re-writing itself because of the time travel. Lindy and Goran are my favorite characters from the past and when their interactions meld and merge, my favorite scenes unfold. The action is very intense and I felt like I was going off to battle the evils of the world, right along with them. Some mysteries and secrets are uncovered and I was taken by surprise by some of them. Somehow, when I read the synopsis, I missed which fairy tale this story was connecting to and I was a little disappointed to think that it wasn't going to tie in to one. About halfway through, my doubt was resolved and I found that Thumbelina was the lucky choice. I love how the fairy tales that are recreated aren't the typical, over-done stories, but are ones that are lesser known, which really gives the book a fresh vibe. The romance is sweet and stabs at the heart a little in this book, but it's the magic and adventure that overpower this tale. The story is left hanging a little and a little clue within the pages makes me think that one more book (at least) will be written and let me just say, I CAN'T WAIT! And I really hope that one little detail that's been bugging me will be answered. Content: mild romance; mild+ violence. *I received a copy, which didn't affect my opinion in any way.*

A page-turner sequel that is even more fun than the first!
Written by Cindy Jewkes on 8th Oct 2017

Calling all fairy tale fans: here is a book for you! Book one of this series—Emerald Bound—gives us an interpretation of the princess and the pea. Topaz Reign continues this tale and introduces the story of Thumbelina. Lindy—the princess who slept on an enchanted emerald, or “pea”—is back in her native land and time. As she tries to learn how to lead her country, a topaz that grants its wearer unmatched beauty and power threatens to overthrow her family, country, and even the world. With help from friends and family, Lindy must figure out the secret of the topaz and destroy it, before it destroys everyone she loves. Lindy is my favorite character from Emerald Bound, so I was very excited to see her grow into a confident, powerhouse woman in this book. Maggie and Garon are also significant players in this story, and Tanner has a more important role in helping take down the wearer of the topaz. I loved trying to figure out which character was Thumbelina, because it’s not obvious at first! Thumbelina is another fairy tale that, like the princess and the pea, is not one that I’ve heard many times. I feel like Hollywood and mainstream books redo the same fairy tales over and over—Cinderella, Snow White, the “classic” princesses—and I love the author’s ability to bring lesser-known fairy tales to the limelight and give them a twist. Like Emerald Bound, Topaz Reign is so much fun, full of action, and sure to keep you turning pages!

Fairytale with a twist

and was excited to be able to read another story with those characters in it. I also love fairy tales especially ones with a new twist. Lindy is back in her own time and struggling with the roles of a queen. Maggie and her brother get pulled into another search for a gem. This time it is a topaz with the gift of beauty. I liked the pacing of this story. The questions of what will happen next start off from the beginning and I couldn't put the book down because I needed to know. I never felt the storyline dragged. I was slightly disappointed with the ending. I read a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.

A Fun Read
Written by sdg on 6th Oct 2017

Maggie and Lindy are back for their second round of adventures in Topaz Reign. This time Lindy has moved from servant to queen back in her own time and land, and Maggie gets some heartfelt back story regarding her family and a romance through time. They both have cute, energetic personalities that contribute to an enjoyable and interesting story that switches back and forth between viewpoints and time. The writing is concise and fast paced with lots of twists and turns and a few new characters. Romance, mystery and a bit of science fiction create a fun tale. What’s not to like!? I was a bit let down by the overly generous treatment of the villain in the climax which seemed unbelievable to me after what had transpired, which is why I give it four of five stars. However, the author ends the story with the pull of a teenage romance which lifts the story from its conflict resolution. All in all, Topaz Reign was a fast-paced, light and enjoyable teen book that can appeal to readers of any age.
